The “Behind the Lens” series is for you! The photographer who wants to learn more or see what’s going on behind the lens. You know, when I’m sitting in my fuzzy socks and trying to manage a growing business all the while learning new tricks, tools and skills to help me. This series will give insight into what has helped me, what I’ve learned and the tips and tricks that I love!
Today’s topic, my favorite lens to shoot with 🙂
The Nikon Nikkor 85mm F/1.8 is by far my favorite lens to date to shoot with. It’s what I call my butter lens because when I put it on my camera body it just makes all of my backgrounds blend into this smoothy finish like butter. What’s nice about this lens is that I feel I can get the best of both worlds. I love to shoot wide open but sometimes find that it’s hard to get perfectly tack sharp images when doing so. This lens allows you to shoot with an F/1.8 aperture and still get tack sharp images. This is what gives me my sparkle eye images that are sharp and still have blurry backgrounds and nice bokeh. Being a prime lens, it’s fast and lets in a ton of light, which I love!
For those who are interested in trying this lens, definitely rent it first seeing as it can be a bit pricey (unless you find one second hand). But I’m fairly certain you’ll fall in love with the crisp edges of focus and the dreamy backgrounds! 🙂
Here are some examples from my 85mm. Check out those buttery backgrounds!
