The Lowery’s Newest Newborn – Richmond Virginia In-Home Newborn Session

How can it be that it was two years ago that I was sharing the Lowery family’s first newborn session? I’ll never forget meeting them for the fist time in Baltimore at a coffee shop downtown to get to know each other. They were in town visiting Emily’s sister and so it worked out perfectly for us to meet in person before she gave birth to Nora. We grabbed coffee and walked around with their goldendoodle Winston and I knew they were great! I mean I have a goldendoodle Winnie and they have a Winston!? That plus they are the nicest people ever! Their newborn session with Nora was bliss and the images were gorgeous. It was also such an easy going session and I felt so at ease around Chris and Emily!

Finley’s Newborn Portraits

New mom confession: We took these pictures weeks ago (like 10 days after she was born) and it took me until this past weekend to finally finish editing them. One thing I love about Finley is that she loves to be held and is such a snuggle bug. But, one thing that’s hard about Finley is that she loves to be held so I don’t have full access to my hands to get things done. My mom guilt made me feel pretty bad that it every day editing these images was on my to do list and each day I just couldn’t get it done. I eventually had to realize that this is my new normal and I needed to give myself all the grace!

Finley’s First Month

It has been a whole month since our baby girl was born and it feels oddly like it was yesterday and forever ago all at the same time. It’s 9:38pm on the night before September 1st and I am forcing myself to sit down and write out this post because 1) it has been on my to do list for awhile now and 2) I know I will be so mad at myself if I don’t. So… in the full transparent parent truth, I’m sitting here with the messiest bun, spit up on on my shirt, haven’t eaten and Sterling is taking one for the team trying to put Finley back to bed as she’s upstairs crying. Now this picture may seem chaotic (and it is) but through all the chaos and tears, mess and poop, this has been the most beautiful month of my life.

Fairfax Family’s Newborn Session

My dear friend and Alpha Phi sister from JMU welcomed her second son into her family this past month and her family of four is precious.  You may remember their family session from last spring which had beautiful bright pink colors from those spring blooms.  Looking back at just a year ago it’s crazy to see how much their first son Lincoln has changed!  He was so much smaller.  Now he’s grown into such a sweet big brother to baby Theo.  While I can’t speak from experience, I would imagine that many parents bringing home a second baby worry about how the first baby will feel and react.  Christina and Erik are over the moon to see how caring and helpful Lincoln is as a big brother!  You should have seen how sweetly excited he got when it was his turn to hold his baby brother.  He was perfectly calm and stepped up to the responsibility like a champ!  Read More »

Picking a Newborn Photographer

How to Pick a Newborn Photographer

— Ask Anything —

The reality of this blog post is that I could be writing it about any type of photography, newborns, family, seniors, weddings etc. etc. etc.  But recently I’ve had my mind on newborn photography and I got thinking about what I would one day want (not pregnant PS.) in a newborn photographer.  Would I want to have a lifestyle session?  Would I want fresh 48 images?  Birth photography!?  These are all options that I honestly don’t know the answers to, and since I’m not pregnant I don’t really have to think about it too long.  But if you are pregnant, you may be thinking of these questions, or maybe not.  I’m here to help you know what you probably should consider. Best of Newborns – 2018

Yall!  Could this job get any better?  Looking through the newborn images from this past year it feels like “no way!”.  I LOVE working with newborns and I especially LOVE the newborn sessions from 2018!  I can’t even believe there was a time when I was turning down newborn enquiries.  Yeah, I was!  I was SO intimidated by these tiny humans!  Plus I didn’t think I’d be any good when I couldn’t run around with them, couldn’t make up games and silly phrases to get the smiles and instead had to be careful and quiet.  Quiet isn’t normally in my nature…. but once I took on my first newborn session it was love! Newborn Portraits – Virginia Beach Session – Sexton Family

These two are probably one of my all time favorite couples!  They started dating at JMU and so when Sterling and I started dating at JMU we would all meet up on the dance floor on Friday and Saturday nights!  Mike (also fondly known as Big Sexy by almost everyone) lived in the house behind Sterling’s house and we were always at either of those two places during my Grad year.  Kevyn is a teacher like me and tons of fun!  The two of them are the kind of friends you want to stay have in your life forever.

The two of them are genuine in every sense of the word, they are loyal, kind and warm.  Kevyn has a spirit that lights up any room she’s in and a contagious laugh!  Mike gives the best hugs and an equally good listener.  The way they treat their friends though is nothing compared to the love they have for each other.  It’s undeniable.  Even just the way they look at each other from across the room, you can tell that they deeply cherish one another.  It’s a love that their son is so blessed to be a part of, one that some people only dream of and others can only emulate; true, constant, big love that pushes into everything they do.  To see these two as parents was amazing because it’s as if the love they have for each other just grew ten fold to include this little tiny baby boy.

Mike and Kevyn, we love you guys and feel so blessed to call you friends.  I’m so glad to have gotten to take these images for you.

Newborn Portraits – Sam – Charlottesville

Meet my new nephew!! That’s right this little cutie is my sister in law’s son and so obviously I’m biased in thinking he’s precious!  He is officially a month old now and doing very well!  His sister Cora has adapted so well and is really sweet with him.  She is gentle and kind and even calms him down by saying “It’s okay little buddy, it’s okay.” ::swoon::  Sam meanwhile is an observer, calm and quietly takes it all in.  He has big blue eyes that watch you intently.  It’s going to be great watching these two grow up! Read More »

Williams Newborn

I’m not going to lie to you, I always get nervous before newborn sessions.  Mostly because I don’t have children of my own yet so I don’t know all the ways to sooth them the ways mothers do.  Also because I’m never 100% sure of how it will go.  With kids I can distract them or play games or try to make them giggle but newborns can’t be distracted easily with games or silly phrases.

While I always get a little nervous before hand – I always sink into calm the moment we start.  Newborn sessions are special – they are new and exciting and sweet.  It’s calm and slower and intentional.  It’s not about games and being silly it’s about sweet little moments.  Capturing the way moms look at their baby, the way dads hold them and look at their wives.  It’s about little toes and tiny ears.  Small little smiles and sleepy poses and details. I always love taking newborn images and even more so editing and delivering newborn images.  They are a milestone, not just a picture for a card but a memory, a moment, a blink.

Lauren’s little girl made our session perfect.  She was sweet and when she wasn’t sleeping she was staring right at the camera with these beautiful big blue eyes.  Lauren has these white curtains in the room which we were able to use as a perfectly clean white background.  The nursery is decorated with sweet little touches of giraffes – a favorite of Lauren’s.  🙂

Here are some of my favorites from the William’s newborn session, I know I’m biased but I think they are simply precious!
